Week in Review: May 6, 2015

Men’s Tennis 

The Men’s Tennis team had another successful season. They won the league title for the 77th time in a row, again going undefeated in the league. The Hornets dominated the conference championship defeating Alma 5-0 in the semi-finals, and then Adrian 5-0 in the finals. Brandon Metzler’17 and David DeSimone’15 were selected to All-MIAA first team. Robert “Bo” Hudson‘16, Eric De Witt’17 and Spencer Navarre’17 earned second team honors. Metzler’17 was also selected MIAA MVP for the second straight season. Desimone’15 won the Allen B. Stowe Memorial Award for best sportsmanship. Kalamazoo finished the regular season ranked No. 10 in the central region with a 15-5 record. The men’s tennis team will face Johns Hopkins in a second round NCAA III Championships regional match at Kenyon College on Saturday, May 9. Both teams received a first round bye.

Women’s Tennis 

The women’s tennis team put forth another strong performance in the MIAA this year placing second in the league. Their record of 7-1 was impressive, with their only loss coming to conference champion Hope. They played twice last week in the conference tournament. They beat Calvin 5-0 in the semifinals at Kalamazoo, before traveling to Hope where they fell 5-0. Despite the loss, the Hornets were ahead in many singles matches. Sarah Woods’16 was named MIAA MVP and All-MIAA First Team for the third consecutive season. Maria Franco’18 and Sabrina Dass’17 were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.

Men’s Baseball 

Men’s baseball was swept by Trine last week 5-3, 9-5, 5-2 and 3-2. Saturday was senior day for the Hornets and the seniors were honored for their final regular season game. The graduating players include John Jackoviak’15, Joey Aliotta’15, Scott Devine’15, Ben Blomme’15, Adam McDowell’15 and Carter Chandler’15.  End of season awards were granted to third basemen Jack Clark’17, outfielder Ian Kobernick’17 and pitcher Ryan Orr’18. Clark’17 was named to first team All-MIAA. Orr’18 and Kobernick’17 were named to second team All-MIAA. The Hornets fished in third place in the league, which is their highest finish in 25 years. It is also only the fifth top three finish in the last fifty years. The team now prepares for Adrian, who they drew for the first round of the playoffs. The game is this Wednesday May 6 at Adrian at 4:00pm.
