Volleyball Goes Undefeated in The U.P.

The Hornets Volleyball team dropped only one set this past weekend at their tournament at Finlandia University.

The team played 2 matches on both Friday and Saturday, with very positive results on both days. Friday the Hornets squared off against Mount Mary and Silver Lake, winning both matches 3-0. First years led the Hornets’ attack on Friday in both matches, Shamari Browning K ’20 and Maria Katrantzi led the team in kills with 8 and 10 in the first and second matches respectively.

On day 2, Kalamazoo faced Great Lakes Christian College and the host team Finlandia. The Hornets swept GLCC 3-0 in the first match before dropping their first set of the weekend In their 3-1 win over Finlandia. Sophomore Shelby Suseland led the Hornets against GLCC with 6 kills, while the Hornets did not allow more than 9 points in a set. In the second match, Kalamazoo fell behind, dropping the first set, but another strong performance from Browning (11 kills), and senior Paige Johnson who provided 25 assists.

“Despite the 11-hour bus ride, we stepped into the gym and performed really well.” Said senior Dana Devito. She added “It could have been really easy for us to complain about the travel, but we kept our spirits high and were able to put a few more wins under our belt.”

The senior libero recorded 51 digs over the weekend, adding to her team leading total of 283.

The Hornets are in action again on Friday at home against Olivet in the Anderson Athletic Center at 7:00 p.m.
