If you haven’t done it yet, you should take the Sexual Safety Survey. The administration is trying to collect more accurate information on sexual assault on campus, and as they have pointed out, your opinion matters.
The survey aims to gather more information on “your perceptions of the campus’ climate for unwanted sexual contact and sexual assault, your perceptions of how the institution addresses and responds to sexual assault, and whether and how often you have experienced unwanted sexual contact or sexual assault.” We are glad to see the administration addressing these issues, and though it is important that everyone participate, the language of the survey is limited.
The survey seems to be only concerned with sexual assault happening “on campus at Kalamazoo College or off-campus events or programs sponsored by Kalamazoo College.” While this information is important to know, the reality is a lot of the sexual assault happening among this community is happening off campus at events like parties that are not sponsored by the college.
Why doesn’t the survey consider those experiences? Does the administration care about sexual assault that happens off campus among students of the K community? We think the answer is yes, but, with no mention or concern of off-campus experiences the survey reads as though it is trying to remove the onus from Kalamazoo College.
Although the administration is not responsible for what happens off-campus, they, along with every person a part of the Kalamazoo College community, is responsible for the culture we create around sexual assault. We hope to receive another survey addressing sexual assault that happens off campus. So, to all you students reading, be responsible, take the Sexual Safety Survey. And to the administration reading, we want to work with you to make a survey that more comprehensively addresses the issue of sexual assault in the K community.
