At approximately 6 p.m. Saturday, February 20, a woman was shot in the parking lot of Meadows Townhomes in Richland Township, beginning multiple shootings that left six dead and two injured. A second shooting took place at Seelye Automotive on Stadium Drive, and a third in the parking lot of Cracker Barrel on 9th Street and I-94, according to MLive.
A fourteen-year-old girl shot during the third shooting was reported to be in critical condition early this morning.
“There was only one shooter,” said Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting during a press conference Sunday, according to CNN. “And that person is in custody.”
Jason Brian Dalton, 45, of Cooper Township was arrested at around 12:40 a.m. this morning when a Kalamazoo Department of public safety officer pulled his car over. Dalton was arrested two blocks from Bell’s Brewery.
As of now, there is no reported reason for the shootings that are being called “random” by multiple news sources.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. today a K-Alert was issued addressing multiple shootings in Kalamazoo County and alerting the campus community of the suspect, described as a white male in his 50s in a dark blue Chevy.
At 10:10 a.m. this morning, Dean Sarah Westfall sent an email to the campus community referring to the K-Alert sent and stating that the local television station, WWMT, is issuing “real-time information about the situation.” She added that the Counseling Center and the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life are available for support to students.
