World Night took place this past Sunday and the program received extremely positive reviews from K students. One of the purposes of World Night is to expose the campus to the cultures that are represented at Kalamazoo College through song, poem, and dance.
Secretary of Latino Student Organization (LSO), Maribel Blas ’17, views World Night as important. “I am proud that K students had an opportunity to showcase their unique cultures. It’s not only an interesting learning experience, but it’s vital that each student is able to be proud of where they come from,” Blas said.
Audience member Kaitlyn Courtenay ’17 found each performance to be special. “The KalamAfrica choir was beautiful to hear in a native language, LSO showed passion for their culture through salsa, Caribbean Society had meaningful poetry, KDesi was absolutely amazing with Bhangra dance, and everyone loved K-POP dance,” Courtenay said
Jessica Magaña ’17 thinks that each student should feel welcomed to share their culture in class and daily discussions on campus, “I wish there were more opportunities to see performances like this at K, especially since there is a growing number of international students it’s important that we try and understand each other culturally,” Magaña said.
