Students living off campus fed up with landlord negligence, instability

  1. Great article, Emily! Well written and sheds much needed light on the off-campus problems not only in Kalamazoo, but in many college towns around the nation! Thank you!

  2. Contract disputes will inevitably arise, and should be settled through discussion, mediation, and if necessary, litigation. It is extremely poor journalism to air one side of the dispute through the press, not even following up with the other party, and allowing one party to make anonymous accusations and libeloous statements while naming the other party and not even contacting them for input. Now that the Index is online and publicly searchable, the shoddy journalism and poor editorial judgment has an even greater impact on people than the printed version did.

  3. Thank you for your response, Stuart. Please see today’s issue of the paper for the correction and letter from Mr. Patrick O’Brien.

    • The Index apologizes for not contacting Patrick O’Brien for a statement and his response. It also apologizes for not holding itself to a standard of disallowing anonymous sources in circumstances that did not ethically merit that lack of identification. The result was a damaging and problematic portrayal.

  4. While The Index may have erred in allowing an anonymous, it does not change the fact that O’Brien is a slumlord. Two years ago I had friends that were renting one of his houses on Eldred. The place was condemned mere weeks into the school year and they had to find another place to live. I was shocked to find current K students are renting that house this year. If anything, The Index should publish the addresses of O’Brien’s homes and encourage K students to stay away.
