Men’s Soccer Battles into MIAA Playoff Territory

Men’s Soccer kept their postseason hopes alive with a 2-1 win on the road against Alma last Saturday. The win improved K’s conference record to 5-5-1.

Sophomore Nicholas Shabino opened the scoring for the Hornets with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute. The Scots answered with a 70th-minute goal off of a penalty kick.

Sophomore Jordan Veillete was the eventual hero for the Hornets though as he netted an 80th-minute goal that would prove to be a game winner and season saver.

“We had to win the game to get back in the playoff hunt, and when he buried that goal late, we knew we were back in it and had to hold strong to stay in the playoff picture,” said junior captain Emerson Talanda-Fisher

The win gave K 16 points in the MIAA, just one point ahead of fifth-place Alma. The road doesn’t get easier for K with matches against the top-two MIAA seeds, Hope and Calvin, still looming.

“With Calvin and Hope coming up at home, we are very focused and motivated to keep our position,” said Talanda-Fisher.

The Hornets will play host to Calvin and Hope in a pair of home matches this week on Tuesday, Oct 29 and Saturday, Nov. 2. The Hornets regular season will come to a close on November 5 at Trine.

Albion and Adrian are still very much in the mix for the fourth place position with 13 and 11 points respectively. With three games remaining in the MIAA slate, every game has the potential to make or break seasons. Due to their current position though, the Hornets can effectively control their own fate by securing wins in their final three matches.

“The next couple games are huge for us and should be very exciting. We’re hoping to have a big crowd with some needed home-field support,” said Talanda-Fisher.

Come out and support the Hornets push for the playoffs on Saturday against rival Hope College at 2:30 p.m.
