Hornet Swimmers Enjoy Long-Anticipated Success

(KSI)

A full crowd of parents and students alike turned out Friday for K’s senior night as the men’s and women’s swim teams took on strong conference rival Calvin.

It was a good night for nearly all the Hornets as the women’s team beat Calvin for the first time ever under Coach Kathy Milliken. “We haven’t beaten Calvin since I’ve been here and this is my twelfth year. I’m looking at the banners right now and I don’t think we’ve beaten them since 1991” says Coach Milliken.

The final score of the women’s meet was Kalamazoo 124 and Calvin 119. K’s women put on a strong performance that included winning both the 200 Yard Medley Relay at the beginning of the meet and finishing strong by out touching Calvin in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Members of the crowd agreed this last home victory was a great sending off for the seniors on the team.

The men put on a good performance but were unable to pull out a win against the powerhouse Calvin. The final score of the men’s meet was Calvin 134 Kalamazoo 103.

Many close finishes in the men’s races were ever-present Friday night, but that was not the case in the diving events. Will Guedes’15 won all the points available to him in both the 1M and 3M diving events.

Despite the men’s loss, Coach Milliken was still impressed with the men’s strong performance and has a positive outlook for the MIAA championships next month.
