Freshmen athletes speak about their early impressions of playing a sport for Kalamazoo College
Ana travelled all the way from the west coast to come to K where she is now a cross country runner. Her father is a K alumnus, so she has been hearing about Kalamazoo College as long as she can remember. Despite looking at schools in California, she felt K was simply a better fit. “My classes have been my favorite thing here. It’s like 10-15 people and we debate over readings,” she says. “It’s different than I expected college to be. I expected all lectures.” As far as cross country goes, she just loves running. “Running makes me a happier person,” says Mesenbring. The cross country team is a very fun group of people, and Mesenbring is happy she’s a part of it.
Travis comes to K from Grand Blanc, MI, where he was a two-sport athlete in high school. He will continue by playing both golf and basketball for the Hornets. When asked why he chose K, Veenhuis said, “Why wouldn’t I choose K? It really covers it.” His favorite aspect about K so far has been the ease of finding balance between studies and fun. As far as college sports go, Veenhuis really enjoys the community K offers. “Both sports teams are close knit groups and I enjoy being a part of them because of the sense of family,” he says.
Football player, Steven Davis, native to Novi, MI, is the only first-year offensive lineman who has started in every game this season. Head coach, Jamie Zorbo, says, “Even if his stats don’t necessarily show it yet, it’s a big deal that Steven is a starter.” Davis says, “I love the team. The coaching staff is always very supportive and my teammates have really helped me adjust to the college lifestyle.” He is also enjoying his first few weeks on campus. He says, “K is great so far. It’s only 2nd week, and I can already tell I will be challenged academically. Plus, my time management skills are going to see a big improvement.”
