The men’s baseball regular season finished this past Saturday following two losses on senior day to Trine. However, the Hornets are not done playing yet.
The team qualified for the MIAA tournament [playoffs] for the second straight year under head coach Mike Ott. Ott is only in his third year at K, however youth and inexperience has never been a detriment for Ott. The baseball team is a very young team. 24 of the 33 players on this year’s roster are sophomores and freshman, something Coach Ott takes pride in. He says the younger guys bring a great energy to the team.
This energy was shown in their run to a 15-13 record for the second straight year. Last year they finished fourth in the league this year they tied for third. This is only the third time since 1991 that the Hornets have made the playoffs. They also made it last year in only Coach Ott’s second season.
This season saw the Hornets come out strong in early league play with a four game sweep of Calvin. Then they took three of four from Alma before getting to the meat of the schedule. After the hot start they split a four game series with Albion and lost a series versus Hope taking only one game. The men then started another win streak in six total games versus Finlandia and Olivet. The six game win streak was halted by conference topping Adrian. However K was able to take one win from four in their series with Adrian. Adrian also took both games in Kalamazoo the next day. Saturday was senior day and the men took on Trine in the final regular season series of the year. Trine won all four games.
Despite the losses, the seniors; John Jackoviak’15, Joey Aliotta’15, Scott Devine’15, Ben Blomme’15, Adam McDowell’15 and Carter Chandler’15, were honored at the game by their numbers being painted on the field. A large crowd turned out in support for the seniors, and all stuck around to support the team through the tough games.
Despite the tough finish to the season, the men still got into the playoffs for a second straight year. Jack Clark’17, Ian Kobernick’17 and Ryan Orr’18 were all honored by earning All-Conference selection. Clark’17 garnered first team All-MIAA and Kobernick’17 and Orr’18 were second team All-MIAA. The Hornets will face off with Adrian today at Adrian at 4:00pm.
