The Index welcomes students with all levels of journalism experience. Whether you were the editor-in-chief of your high school newspaper or have never written an article, we will provide the training and skills you need to be a top journalist.
Students may apply and become a member of more than one section. However, staff members may not write for both the news and opinion sections. Students also may not work on both the editorial and business staffs. Read below to find out more information about each section.
If you love to be in-the-know and enjoy talking to campus leaders, professors, administrators and government officials, then the news section is where you belong.
To join the news section, applicants must attend an Index general staff meeting in the Index office any Monday at 5pm. Before becoming an official Index staff writer, new writers are expected to write at least three stories.

If you like to tell others what’s on your mind, then the Index’s opinions section is just for you.
During meetings, members discuss the editorial topics of the week and what stance the Index should take on the issues. Anyone who has an opinion about collegiate, campus, local, state or national issues should consider applying to be on the board.

Columnists write about a topic of their choice, while cartoonists submit creative, original drawings.

Do you take your camera with you everywhere you go? Are you constantly trying to capture moments before they slip away? If you don’t mind getting close to athletes, professors and performers, then the photographer position is right for you.
Photographers shoot news, features, sports and arts photos on a regular basis. We will teach you lighting techniques and photo editing skills upon request.

Are you interested in graphic design? Did you love working for your high school yearbook or newspaper? Do you know what the Adobe Suite is? If you answered yes to one of these questions, Index Design may be the place for you!
Designers is in charge of layout for the entire newspaper. As a designer you will learn how to use Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as valuable hands-on technical and design experience that you truly cannot get anywhere else on campus. Never heard of the Adobe Suite or worked on your high school publications? Don’t worry! We will teach you how to use all the programs.

Videographers will be expected to shoot and/or edit video clips 2 to 5 minutes in length. Videos may be produced for news, sports and arts stories or as stand-alone feature clips. Basic knowledge of Adobe Premiere or other film editing programs is necessary.
Want a career in business after graduation? Join The Index business staff and receive professional experience that prepares you for a career in the field.
The business staff is in charge of the Index’s advertising sales and distribution logistics. Account Executives are responsible for contacting clients, arranging meetings, preparing presentation materials, and of course, presenting our products to clients. Account Executives receive excellent training and support from student managers and professional staff. Other opportunities include creative design and logistics management.
Working for The Index business staff provides students with unparalleled practical experience and education. Student managers gain skills in leadership, communication, marketing and logistics.
